they want to shut down the Alameda Animal Shelter
Not sure if you are aware but the city of Alameda wants to shut down the no kill shelter

and I have a problem with that as shelters are impart and special to me. I have volunteered for them and our big dumb (no really, he is) adorable orange boy came from one

Alameda Animal Shelter is going to close as the city feels that any needs can be met by near by towns. a: this is false as they are already overflowing, and b: as anyone knows, getting off island is often times challenging, so taking something like a stray over to a shelter in Oakland or san leandro? not going to happen that often. instead, the stray population will grow as animals are abandoned and not neutered, there will be more disease, and then death when they get hit by cars

so if you could please sign this over here I would appreciate it

I want to get a gift card for a coworker who just had their 2nd child. Any tips on which of the stores along Park have the best selection for newborns - toddlers?

SunCal Slate?
So I've seen mention in both the Sun and the East Bay Express of the so-called "SunCal Slate", but nobody seems to be saying who's on the slate.

So who is supposedly on the "SunCal slate"? And is there really such a thing? I have some guesses, but I really don't know for sure.

Found Rottweiler
I found the sweetest rottweiler stray this evening near Webster and Haight. She's sweet and submissive, enjoys a belly rub, and sits on command. Do you think you might know this dog? I hate to think of her at the shelter. We've got her overnight, but due to allergies we have to find a shelter for her in the morning. Please reply with her name if you think you know her, and we'll test it out. Thank you!

Measure B
Measure B goes down in flames: No 11,947 (84.93%) Yes 2,120 (15.07%). Really cool since SunCal outspent the opponents by more than 20 to 1.

Good article in the Chron about it, too (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/02/02/BACC1BRL7V.DTL&tsp=1).

Which stores for *your* 3/50 project?
For some reason I thought there was a current Alameda group on Facebook, it appears there is only a nostalgic group.  Well a few others but the members are 1 to 32.  Anywho..  There is a sign in Julie's about the 3/50 project a long while ago and noticed that there is a 3/50 group on Facebook as well:

( and those not on facebook: http://www.the350project.net/valentine_home.html )

Then a few days ago sushispook  mentions on Facebook The New Zealander is no more.  With that and the fact I got new jobs and actual income coming my way real soon, made me wondered what is *my* 3...  Well I have more than three.

Julie's (not as often as i should considering how close it is to me)
Salon One (been going there since 1998'ish)
Forbidden Island
Dan's Produce (again don't go as much as I should)
Java Rama (for when Julie's wi fi is down)
La Pinata (though I don't think they are hurting at ALL in this recession)
Alameda Wine Co
Books Inc (another I don't go enough, but I love it there)

there are also places I've wanted to go but haven't, like urban forest.

so what is your 3 and do you ACTUALLY spend money there or just wish you spent money there?

I made a point yesterday to go shopping at Dan's produce.  I still had to go to Safeway in the end to pick up buns, but did the bulk of my shopping at Dan's.

Furnace repair?
Anybody got any recommendations for furnace repair companies? The furnace looks like it was installed 10-20 years ago, at a guess; so, it's not brand new, but it's not ancient either. I need to get somebody out here today, if at all possible. Thanks!

(Almost) Free lightbulbs
Pagano's Hardware has a display of free compact florescent light bulbs. Limit 3 per person and you pay the tax, but that was all of 59 cents. Not a bad deal.

helicopter around park and otis
I woke up at 6:30 ish, went outside for a smoke and saw a helicopter hover right above Park and San Jose for a good few minutes, it moved over to just south of San Jose (more towards Otis) and more west and actually dipped lower and hovered (seriously I thought it was trying to land on top of a roof)

a friend twittered about a half hour later with the same thing... woke up at 6:30 to sound of helicopter...

so what is up?

Ay, carambola!
Has anyone (recently) seen starfruit (aka carambolas) on the Island. Years ago (maybe a decade ago), Paul's Produce (now Dan's) used to carry them regularly, and I've seen them at Raley's, but not in quite a while. Anyone seen 'em lately?

this may be old news to everybody, but as i was riding west along santa clara avenue in alameda, there is alot of broken glass between bay and webster. if you're riding your bike, be careful.... and if you park there, beware: it looks like someone went on a window smashing spree.
